ESPN goes overboard on coverage of Blatt firing
I don't usually like to be a TV critic, but ESPN's coverage of the Cleveland Cavaliers' firing their head coach, David Blatt, went way overboard. They spent almost the entire hour of SportsCenter talking about this one topic, as if someone really famous had just retired or passed away. It was a bit much, even for me. I would rather have more coverage on the deplorable water conditions the Olympic athletes going to compete in for the rowing events in Rio!
The Philadelphia Eagles aren't exactly wasting any time deciding who's going to remain on the team. I think they are the first team to officially sign any of their players for next year. They decided to resign both tight ends – Brent Celek and Zach Ertz – to new contracts.
In other football news, the AFC championship game between the New England Patriots and the Denver Broncos was very interesting from start to finish. The Denver defense dominated Tom Brady and his very weak offensive line, with three sacks and knocking him down at least 20 times. Brady is probably still sitting in the whirlpool as I write this. For Denver, Peyton Manning played a pretty good game with two touchdown passes on the day. There is a rumor that the Super Bowl will be Manning's last game. I think that would be a good decision on his part. It would be great to see him finish his career with a great performance.
The NFC game between the Carolina Panthers and the Arizona Cardinals was an extremely dull blowout by Carolina with a final score of 49-15. With this being a conference championship, we all would have liked to have seen a better game. If the Panthers play as well as they did last Sunday, I don't think the Broncos have much of a chance to win.
In the Australian Open tennis tournament, Roger Federer lost to Novak Djokovic in a tight, four-set match. Now that Federer has lost, I will be cheering for Andy Murray to win because of what happened earlier in the tournament to his father-in-law, Nigel Sears. He collapsed while coaching another player on the women's side of the event and had to be taken to the hospital. Reports say that he has returned home to continue his recovery.
Serena Williams has advanced to her seventh Australian Open final, and will play against Angelique Kerber. I don't have a favorite in this match, but I wouldn't mind if Kerber pulls a huge upset. Keeps it interesting.
