October 10, 2014

Madison MacElrevey led her Vikings girls' team to a 19-41 win over Seaford and a 15-46 win over Polytech this past Wednesday in Henlopen Conference cross country action at Chapel Branch Nature Trail in Seaford. MacElrevey hit the finish line in 22:11, followed by teammates Keren Rams in 23:02, Sarah Dziak in 23:22, Grace Brokaw in 23:53, Sarah Rambo in 24:06, Lauren Kelley in 26:00 and Maria Venture in 26:01.

The boys' team split, winning the Seaford meet 15-50 while losing the Polytech meet by a close score of 25-30. Frosh Sam Nye moved up to the No. 1 spot with a second-place finish in 18:19, while senior Ryan Wilson was third in 18:33.

Gus Zsiah ran 20:05, Holden Kammerer ran 20:07, Joey Montabell ran 20:10, Cole Conrad ran 20:59, Jose Ascencio ran 21:00 and Lohgan Kline rounded out the Vikings with a time of 21:04.

Middle school cross country

Milford topped the Mariner boys 22-39, while Sussex Academy also topped Mariner 19-36 on the boys side. SAS runner Blake Hundley, a seventh grader, ran away with the tri-meet with a blazing 10:02 for the 1.8-mile course, but Mariner put up a great fight with a barrage of personal-best marks. Seventh-grader Levi Clifton maintained his fine early season form, placing fifth overall in 11:42 (a 13:00 2-mile equivalent), a new Mariner record. Eighth-grader Cole Quillen stayed solid with an 11:58 clocking to take the seventh spot. Fifteen other Mariner boys took large chunks off their personal records at the Virden Center course, including Parker Brown (15th, 12:28), L.B. Harrington (17th, 12:30), and Connor Hitchens (19th, 12:50). The biggest improvements were made by Chase Boyle, Hunter Tyndall, Christian Partlow, Gabriel Garcia, Mason Fluharty and Jordan Jefferson, who each knocked more than 90 seconds from their two-mile equivalents.

Sussex Academy also topped Mariner 24-37 on the girls' side, while Milford topped Mariner 25-36. Individually, it was sixth-grader Lindsay Rambo who celebrated her birthday with her second win in as many meets, running away with the individual title over 1.8 miles in 12:57, a new Mariner record. Newcomer Fallon Moore continued her rapid improvement with another personal best time of 13:26. Both runners took more than 20 seconds off their two-mile equivalents from last week.

Seventh grader Olivia Brozefsky ran 15:00 for Beacon Middle School at the Chipman meet at Killens Pond, which has Chipman winning 17-65; however, in my 25 years there is not a cross country score that can add up to 65 in a dual meet. The top five runners on each team score in a cross country meet. Other finishers for Beacon were Jill Seeker in 16:52, Audrey Crouch in 18:40, Amaya Dasiey in 17:03, Paige Balance in 20:05 and Haley Gibson in 20:06. For the boys, Joe Garcia ran 15:49 and Charles Melson ran 15:49 as well on the 2.1 mile course.
