Cape soccer falls to Caesar Rodney
Whenever the Cape soccer squad plays Caesar Rodney, it’s a sure bet that players will leave it all on the field. The match April 15 was no different, as each team pushed themselves to the limits on the CR pitch.
When the final whistle blew, CR walked off the field with a 2-0 win. The Vikings move to 5-3, while CR is 5-1.
Each team had multiple chances to score. If not for goalies Brynne Fox of Cape and Eva Sheppard of CR, the scores would be quite different.
The Riders outshot the Vikings 14-9. Fox stopped 12 goal attempts, while Sheppard made nine saves.
It took 58 minutes for either team to score, and that score held up as the game winner, as Anna Hake put the ball past Fox off a pass from Adriana Lagrassa. Riders senior Alexandra LeNoir scored the insurance goal unassisted at the 76-minute mark.
“I thought we competed at a pretty high level,” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. “We could’ve improved in winning 50-50 balls in the midfield. We’re a young team learning to compete at a high level. Once we find a way to break through against teams that are considered to be better than us on paper, we will be a force to be reckoned with. We will continue to take the season one game at a time. We’re excited for the final push after spring break, as we try to make the state tournament for the first time since 2019.”
The Vikings’ junior varsity team took a 1-0 victory over the Riders to move to 5-0 on the season. Freshman Zoey Neufeld tallied the lone goal in the match.
