A little more than one year after taking office, Rehoboth Beach Commissioner Don Preston has resigned, effective immediately.

Preston informed Mayor Stan Mills of his decision Nov. 20.

“After careful thought, I have decided to resign from the board of commissioners effective immediately. When I joined the board, I had high hopes of working to elevate our city and making it even better than it is today for the people who live here, work here, own businesses here, and those who visit here. After more than a year on the board, I don’t see a path to my high hopes,” said Preston, in his resignation notice to Mills. “I wish the city staff, you and other members of the board the very best in your work and daily lives.”

Preston joined the board of commissioners in September 2023 after running unopposed for the position. His term expires in September 2026.

“While I am disappointed with Commissioner Preston’s resignation from the board of commissioners, I sincerely appreciate his service to the community,” said Mills, in a prepared statement.

The city expects to appoint someone to fill Preston’s unexpired term, said Mills. The process for that appointment is still being determined, he said.
