High school seniors at Cape Henlopen, Sussex Academy and beyond reached a major life milestone this week when they walked across the stage, collected their diplomas and tossed their mortarboards in the air to celebrate becoming graduates.
Commencement is a time to celebrate not only the students, but also everyone who helped these kids along the way. From parents and grandparents to tutors and coaches to teachers as far back as kindergarten, each left an impression – some more than others.
Examples of teachers’ impact on learners can be found at Sussex Consortium, where 12 students graduated from the program May 31. As Principal Vivian Bush said, these students’ disabilities do not define them. Instead, they’re part of the tapestry of what makes them who they are.
Each student, no matter their ability, disability, advantage or disadvantage, goes through ups and downs during their educational career. Each faces challenges, whether it be COVID-19 and learning from home or an unexpected pop quiz or typical teenage drama, but each perseveres and, hopefully, strives to become better.
Like students before them, this year’s class of seniors has left an indelible mark on the community. Some have won state championships in sports, others have brought home prizes from regional, state and national competitions in events like Odyssey of the Mind and Business Professionals of America. Some traveled the world showcasing their talents. Each accomplishment raises the bar for the next generation.
So as the curtain closes on seniors’ high school journey, the Class of 2024 stands on the precipice of a new chapter in life, armed with resilience, determination and myriad accomplishments. The next phase will also bring significant change. Gone will be the structured environment of high school. It’s now up to students to navigate adulthood and all it entails.
Whether the next step is college, the military or a career, this year’s graduates should always cherish the bonds made with their classmates and the time they had in school. Now comes a time to set new goals, create new memories and embrace new challenges.
