CRC Safe Harbor Day Shelter marks seven years of service
The Community Resource Center’s Safe Harbor Day Shelter is marking its seventh year of operations at its Rehoboth Beach location.
In 2024, the center hosted more than 3,000 individual visits by nearly 100 clients who were able to access food, do laundry, take a shower, pick up mail and be connected to needed social services.
By expanding its services, the day shelter has become a year-round resource for those who do not have a permanent address. All year long, clients can get a cup of coffee and other beverages, as well as snacks. Thanks to donations from the community and a large group of volunteers who provide home-cooked hot meals, the CRC has served almost 600 breakfasts and 1,400 lunches, primarily in the winter months. When temperatures dip below freezing, the center expands its hours to meet the needs of those who are unhoused.
“There is a growing need for this service in the community,” said Annette Johnson, LMSW, program manger. “In the six years since I’ve been involved in the day shelter, I have seen an increase in the number of homeless clients, and the CRC has done amazing things to grow to meet the need. We thank Beebe Population Health, La Red, and Nurses and Neighbors for partnering with us to provide physical health services, Brandywine Counseling for mental health services, and First State Community Action Agency for case management services.”
In 2024, a total of 26 clients obtained low-cost cellphones, 16 clients were given help writing resumes and applying for jobs, seven received one-on-one help with accessing their Social Security accounts, and 24 were assisted with applying for services such as food stamps, Medicaid and cash assistance. Three clients obtained permanent housing, and staff is assisting others with the housing application process.
“These services can help clients who are ready to move toward a more stable life make that move, and if there are homes available, they can settle into a place of their own,” said Nancy Alexander, CRC director. “We are always rooting for our clients to make the next step in their journey toward self-sufficiency.”
