Delaware Shakespeare musical performance set April 17 in Lewes

The Lewes Public Library’s Spoken Word Society and Delaware Shakespeare will present a performance of “Full Fathom Five,” at 7 p.m., Thursday, April 17, at the library, 111 Adams Ave., Lewes. Starring professional composer and actor Emily Schuman, the program features music written around characters, sonnets and moments from Shakespeare.

“Emily has an artistry that is effortless and moving, and ‘Full Fathom Five’ is a prime example of that,” said Del Shakes Producing Artistic Director Mariah Ghant. “Her original music is presented in this performance in a very unique way, and shows how the stories and characters of Shakespeare continue to be felt and seen in our present-day lives,”

“Delaware Shakespeare uses original music and sound to great effect in their full productions, and Emily Schuman is a big part of this. A highly skilled actor and a gifted musician, Emily’s work is engaging, insightful and a joy to be a part of,” said David White, Spoken Word Society volunteer artistic director.

Schuman is a graduate of the Fame! Performing arts high school in NYC and Denison University in Ohio, and has done postgraduate study in Shakespeare at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. She has worked professionally as a composer, actor and musical performer since 2013. She joined Delaware Shakespeare as a composer in 2017and was named associate artist in music and acting in 2018.

Delaware Shakespeare is the region’s premier professional Shakespearean ensemble. Since 2003, the Wilmington-based troupe has performed a wide array of Shakespeare’s works and Shakespeare-adjacent projects across Delaware and beyond, envisioning a Delaware where people from all walks of life celebrate and explore their shared humanity through the lens of Shakespearean works.

The Lewes Spoken Word Society celebrates the tradition and artistry of oral storytelling through lectures, performances, discussions, demonstrations and other publicly shared experiences.
