Dementia caregiver symposium set May 2 in Lewes

The Alzheimer’s Association Delaware Valley Chapter invites dementia caregivers from Sussex County and the surrounding area to an educational symposium from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Friday, May 2, at the Lewes Public Library, 111 Adams Ave., Lewes.

Attendees will learn from local experts and caregivers about dealing with common challenges, best practices for managing burnout, the latest in dementia research, and the availability of resources and support services.

"Caring for someone living with dementia brings a unique set of challenges and rewards," said Erica Holmes, Alzheimer's Association Delaware Valley Chapter programs manager. "It is important that dementia caregivers have access to tools and best practices that can guide them on their journey. We are pleased to bring this education opportunity into the Southern Delaware community to help people empower themselves to provide quality care while managing their own well-being."

Alzheimer's disease affects 7 million individuals worldwide, with profound impacts on families, caregivers, workplaces and communities. According to Alzheimer’s Association figures for 2024 in Delaware alone, 22,300 people are living with Alzheimer’s disease and 31,000 people provide 46,000,000 hours of unpaid care at a value totaling $909,000,000.

In all, 61.8% of dementia caregivers report chronic health conditions and 23.3% of dementia caregivers report depression.
