Lewes in Bloom featured on local podcast

April 9, 2025

The heart of the Lewes Tulip Celebration is managed by one volunteer organization.

To bring this year’s colorful blossoms to life, Lewes in Bloom members worked last fall to plant more than 31,000 tulip bulbs and another 5,000 spring bulbs.

In the latest episode of the We in Lewes podcast, Ed Zygmonski, Lewes in Bloom co-chair, discusses the behind-the-scenes work of the 450-member organization.

“To the degree that Lewes has a look, it is due in large part to Lewes in Bloom,” said Kevin McGuiness, podcast host.

Zygmonski explains how the group coordinates planting, maintaining and preserving 18 public gardens, and nine basket and planter installations throughout the city. “We couldn't do this without the volunteers,” he said. “We put in about 16,000 hours, which translates to about $500,000, helping the city save that money by planting all these flowers.” And then there’s the watering: It takes more than 600 gallons of water to care for the plantings, and every garden, basket and planter is watered several times a week.

The episode is available now at at weinlewes.com and on major podcast platforms.
