Lewes High crowns Homecoming queen in 1966
It’s Homecoming season across the country. Cape Henlopen crowned its king and queen Oct. 4, while Sussex Academy will do so Friday, Oct. 18.
According to an article published in 2014, the Homecoming tradition could’ve started in 1911 at the University of Missouri, although other colleges also claim to have started the annual event.
What is known is that Homecoming had become a part of Lewes High School by 1966. These photographs from the Beacon yearbook show the festivities from Friday, Nov. 11, 1967, on the Lewes football field.
The Homecoming Court comprised two junior attendants – Rowena Foley escorted by Lee Jefferson, and Susan Hudson escorted by John Elliott. The three senior girls were Sharon Maull escorted by Robby Schroeder, Karen Maull escorted by Bruce Heal, and Janice Hart escorted by Mike Sing. Roberta Westover, the previous year's queen, crowned Sharon Maull the new queen.
