There will be a new champion in men’s college basketball because the University of Connecticut, who has won two straight national championships, lost in a close game to No. 1 Florida. UConn did a great job defending the championship, even though they weren’t nearly as strong as they were in the past two years. They gave Florida all they could handle in this game but couldn't come up with a win.
For me, Duke and Houston have been the most impressive teams so far in the tournament. They have been completely dominating their opponents, winning the games by over 20 points. As a result of the new rules for transferring in college basketball, it will be harder for a non major school to make the Final Four since the best players in the smaller schools are now using the transfer window to go to the big programs.
On the women’s side, the field is slightly more wide open. You have the usual suspects with Connecticut and South Carolina along with LSU, but then you have the teams from the West Coast, USC and UCLA, even though they are now in the Big Ten. It’s nice to see the talent pool expanding across the country. Unfortunately for USC, I don’t think they’re going to win a title this year because their best player Juju Watkins went down with an ACL injury in the second round game. She is one of the best players in the country.
Baseball opening day is here. My Phillies beat the Washington Nationals 7-3 in 10 innings. The two teams combined for over 30 strikeouts! Some of that was due to the 4 p.m. start with shadows everywhere in the infield, but the two starting pitchers were dealing with it and building on their own stats.
Next week, I will definitely talk more about baseball. Go Phillies!
I also hope the weather is going to be consistently warmer now that it is spring! Seems like winter just doesn't want to let go.
