Reader expresses concern about crossovers

April 25, 2025
With the upcoming completion of the southbound Route 1 bridge at Route 16, I’m concerned about all the left turns at crossovers. This includes the high-accident areas of Cave Neck, Red Fox, Hudson and Minos Conaway roads.

I always relied on the changing of the light at Route 16 to make my turn, as traffic seemed to either halt or slow down. Now I feel it might be a continuous flow of cars whose drivers don't need to use the light to turn or stop at Route 16.

Neighbors who live in these areas are well aware of the high number of accidents that have occurred even with the light, and that doesn't even address the added volume of summer car traffic. I’ve always felt that cars seem to go faster seeing someone who needs to turn left; then drivers misjudge the amount of time it takes to cross over Route 1. Many drivers make illegal U-turns at crossovers, despite the signs.
