Shame on Rehoboth Beach government leaders. For years, events in Rehoboth Beach were postponed to avoid busy weekends and holidays. For example, the annual Main Street fireworks were moved to Sundays. Even the Delaware Democratic Party moved events to not coincide with Rosh Hashanah. But this past holiday weekend, sandwiched between Good Friday and Easter Sunday, Rehoboth Beach government officials allowed a rally on Saturday, which should be called “Bad Saturday,” with protesters spewing hate against our government, president and policies.
Since when should our leaders choose politics over religious respect? This is an insult to a holy weekend, to locals and small businesses, where many complained they couldn’t enjoy Saturday due to parking congestion and angry people holding negative signs. Several small businesses had a slower afternoon because these protesters were not shopping or eating in town. Families come from all over to enjoy this holiday, but instead were denied opportunities to shop, dine and enjoy the salt water and Boardwalk.
Rehoboth doesn’t need to be flooded with cars displaying bumper stickers like “Hate has no home here,” when their hypocritical owners are yelling negative chants.
Speakers like Attorney General Kathy Jennings, Rep. Claire Synder-Hall and sadly, our new governor, were all rousing the crowds, encouraging the hate. Again, a slap in the face to the true locals and small businesses of our small town.
Wake up, leaders, and stop allowing the angry mobs to capitalize on our charming hometown. Protest on the highway if you must. Better yet, spend your time volunteering for a real purpose, like reading aloud to children at a library, or maybe a beach cleanup. Be productive, not disruptive.
