Rock Your Socks program marks World Down Syndrome Day March 21
The Down Syndrome Association of Delaware invites every Delawarean to participate in the celebration of World Down Syndrome Day Friday, March 21, through the annual Rock Your Socks program. This global initiative is designed to raise awareness and promote advocacy for individuals with Down syndrome.
Since its launch in 2014, DSA of DE’s Rock Your Socks program has grown tremendously, now distributing more than 50,000 pairs of socks annually. World Down Syndrome Day takes place March 21, a symbolic date that reflects the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome that characterizes Down syndrome. Socks were chosen as the program's symbol because the karyotype of Down syndrome chromosomes resembles mismatched socks. By wearing brightly colored, mismatched socks, participants unite in a powerful message of support, inclusion and awareness for the Down syndrome community. Wearing bold and colorful socks helps spark conversations and increase understanding of Down syndrome, fostering an environment of inclusion and advocacy.
“All are invited to join the Rock Your Socks movement by ordering socks and participating in all the Down Syndrome Association of Delaware events,” said DSA of DE Executive Director Lauren Camp Gates. “The Rock Your Socks movement is about more than just a fundraiser; it’s an opportunity to honor accomplishments and advocate for the inclusion of individuals with Down syndrome in Delaware and throughout the entire world.”
