Rose Marie Burton, cherished community member
Rose Marie Burton, 95, departed this life Thursday, Nov. 14, 2024, in Harrisburg, Pa. She was born Dec. 14, 1928, daughter of the late Orville Beckett and Mary E. Tyre of Frankford. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Burton; sister, Almenia Showell; and brothers, John Edward, George Burton and Vernon Harvey Tyre.
Affectionately known as Miss Rose, she was a lifelong resident of Frankford and a cherished member of her community; her name is known in nearly every corner of town. Growing up in Frankford, she spent summers at the campground and the beach, held her first job at Eagle Poultry, and enjoyed crabbing with her family, a tradition she carried on well into her 80s.
She loved puzzles and cards, never missing a chance to beat whoever dared to play her in a game of Bid Whist. An avid baker and cook, her sweet potato pies and fudge were holiday staples, and whipping up a cake “just because” was a regular occurrence.
Family gatherings were very important to Rose as she got a chance to interact with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be remembered for her infectious laugh, no-nonsense personality, and unwavering loyalty to those she loved and cared about.
She is survived by her sons, Kendal (Delores) of Camden, and Leahmond (Cheryl) of Harrisburg, Pa.; sister, Hester Chambers of New Castle; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and many nephews, nieces, and cousins.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 30, at Antioch A.M.E. Church, 194 Clayton Ave., Frankford, where friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. for viewing and visitation. Rev. Eloise W. Scales will officiate the service. Interment will immediately follow in the adjoining church cemetery.
