Royals girls’ basketball goes 1-and-1 in Governors Challenge

January 3, 2025

Delmarva Christian girls’ basketball defeated Pocomoke 44-37 Dec. 26, then fell two days later to a much-taller Cambridge-South Dorchester squad 32-48 during the Governor’s Challenge held at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore field house.

Senior Layni Dukes continued to fill a leadership role, pacing the Royals with 17 points, seven rebounds and six steals while blocking two Warriors shots. Bella Marinelli showed her speed and defensive prowess, racking up eight points and three rebounds, dishing off two assists, snagging three steals and blocking a shot.

Evelyn Bohinski was a force in the paint, grabbing seven rebounds and blocking five Warriors shots while adding six points, assisting on two shots and making two steals. Senior Taylor Lowe scored six while making seven steals. Forward Eva Elliott made five steals while blocking two shots and scoring three points. Junior Riley Barto and freshman Avery McCoy shared four points and added support from the bench.

“It was a good team effort from everybody tonight,” said head coach Frank Roach.

The Royals faced a tough Cambridge-South Dorchester squad Dec. 30, and the Vikings’ height was just too much for the Delmarva Christian team as they fell 32-48.

“We were definitely the smaller team,” said Roach. “Our girls fought hard the entire game. We were rebounded 19-4 in the first half. When they got the rebound, we were on them, making it hard for their second-chance shots. On our end, we were patient and tried to get the good shots. We wanted to move the ball and take good shots. In the second half, they got the advantage in the paint and got points in the interior. They are tall girls. We didn’t hang our heads, and brought it to within 10; we just couldn’t get over the hump. I do like how we fought and continued to fight the entire game.”

Senior Layni Dukes secured another double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. She leads the team in two-pointers, three-pointers, steals, free throws and total points, with 124 points on the season.

“I’m glad I could contribute,” said Dukes. “They were tall, and I had to step up with rebounding. I’m excited and happy how we played.”

Junior Eva Elliot garnered 11 points, three assists, and three blocks. Evelyn Bohinski added eight points while grabbing five rebounds, making two steals and blocking two Vikings shots.

Bella Marinell, Riley Barto and Avery McCoy fought hard on both ends of the hardwood.

The Royals have an open schedule until Tuesday, Jan. 21, when they will travel to face Salisbury Christian School.
