Royals showcase growth despite 4-0 loss at Indian River
Delmarva Christian girls’ soccer held on for as long as they could against a storied Indian River program but lost 4-0 April 17 in their final game before spring break.
IR scored in the closing moments of the first half to take a 2-0 lead into the half, but the close margin inspired belief among the girls.
“We kept it pretty tight and competitive, so I'm really proud of our girls,” coach Curtis Jones said. “This is probably one of the best games we've played.”
A relatively young team with athletic but slightly inexperienced seniors, the Royals are starting to come together despite their 1-7 record.
“[Our] positioning this game was a little bit better – we've been having some issues with that – and aggressiveness as far as getting to the ball on 50-50s and that kind of stuff,” Jones said.
An injury to starting goalkeeper Tori Royster with the game at 2-0 resulted in junior Emelia Faubert having to protect the pipes.
“Emelia stepped up, Lucy Magee really dominated today, and we saw Avery Palmer come out and show what she’s got to work with,” Jones said.
The Indians broke through twice more to tally the two final goals in the 4-0 victory.
Delmarva Christian will try to pick up a win when they welcome Sussex Central Monday, April 28.
