Scouts hit the track for Pinewood Derby
The cars don’t have engines, but there were sound effects to make the Rehoboth Beach fire hall sound like Dover Motor Speedway.
The Pack One Cub Scouts from Lewes held its annual Pinewood Derby competition Feb. 22.
The pack boasts 62 boys and girls, and 27 scout leaders from Lewes, Rehoboth Beach and Milton. About 50 cars were entered in the competition. This year, there was even an adult division.
The scouts, who are in grades K-5, have a few months to build their car from a block of wood.
There were patriotic cars, cars that looked like popcorn buckets and even one shaped like a Tesla truck.
Creativity was important. There were awards for scariest, most realistic and most unique.
But the cars were built for speed.
This year, the track was taller, with six lanes instead of four.
The higher starting point made for some record times at the finish line.
Pack One wanted to thank the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company for letting them use the hall this year.
The results are listed by average time, average speed, car number and scout rank.
