Seashore Striders runners have three series choices in 2013

January 25, 2013

Runners love to race in a series, and I think most runners feel a sense of added accomplishment if they complete a series. The Seashore Striders have three series for runners to look forward to this summer, and several races are part of all three, making it easy to qualify and complete them all.

The popular Summer Series is entering its 23rd year at the beach, and last year our numbers were the highest ever with several events. To become a qualifier of the Championship Series one must complete any five of the 11 5K events as well as one of the two 5-mile events.

The third annual Triple Crown Series will again consist of three events in 36 hours kicked off by the ninth Georgetown Public Library 5K Run in Georgetown on Friday, June 14. The third Irish Eyes 5K in Milton will be held Saturday, June 15, while the popular 22nd running of the Rehoboth Ale House Father's Day 5K will finish things off on Sunday morning in Rehoboth Beach on June 16.

The inaugural 6-Pack Series will consist of six events in just over a week, as runners will have to first complete the Triple Crown Series and follow it up the next weekend with the 1st Shadow Run 5K on Friday night, June 21, in Lewes; the ninth Jungle Jim’s 5K Splash on Saturday, June 22;  and the 18th Bill Degnan Memorial 5K in Lewes on Sunday morning, June 23.

Stay tuned as next week the Seashore Striders will roll out a new 100-mile challenge where runners add up the distances of certain Seashore Striders qualifying events in five of the current seven distances in a year. The Striders have seven distances (1M, 5K, 5M, 10K, 15K, 13.1M and 26.2M) to choose from throughout the year.

Half-marathon training program to begin Feb. 1

The Seashore Striders Half-Marathon online training program is set to begin Friday, Feb. 1, and will take runners through a 10-week training program highlighted by the Seashore Classic Half-Marathon scheduled for Sunday, April 14. I designed and wrote the program in 2003 before our area’s first half-marathon, and it consisted of base miles, the long run and mile repeat intervals. This past fall I tweaked the program to gear it more toward the working runner who would like to complete the race but can only dedicate four days per week to training.

This time around, I will again offer an “A” program for the more experienced runner, and a “B” program for the beginning runner.

My hope is that many beginning runners who may not have the background, may not run every day, or may not have the training time to put in will buy into the program with a goal of finishing the event.

The 10-week program consists of four days of running per week, and runners who join will receive the following: program training booklet, a 10-week training log, T-shirt, a ticket to the pre-race carb-load dinner, and a $20 coupon to use for a future Seashore Striders preregistration entry or part of a classic entry. Cost for the program is $100. Interested and brave beginning runners should email me at tim@seashorestrider.com for a Half Program Registration Form or call the Seashore Striders at 302-644-8952.
