St. Peter’s to hold Longest Night service Dec. 18
St. Peter’s Episcopal Church will offer its Longest Night service at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 18, at 200 Second St., Lewes.
Each year around Dec. 20, the Earth’s northern pole reaches its maximum tilt away from the sun, creating the shortest day and longest night in the northern hemisphere, aka the winter solstice. At the same time, folks who are going through trying times of loss and grief may feel disconnected from the spirit of the seasonal holidays.
Feeling out of sync with happy holidays such as Christmas and New Year’s may compound feelings of isolation and sadness. Perhaps it is the first Christmas since the loss of a loved one or the anniversary of their passing. Maybe a long-term relationship has failed or a job has been lost. In the midst of all the holiday frenzy, some feel left out as they endure the long night of their soul.
This year, St. Peter’s Church in Lewes offers in-person worship for those seeking prayer and contemplation. All are welcome to gather in the sanctuary in downtown Lewes to lay their burdens before God and pray together, recalling his unwavering love and seeking consolation. All who participate are encouraged to find peace and comfort in knowing they are not alone and are beloved by God.
