Sussex County Democratic Committee elects new officers

Next meeting set March 24 in Georgetown
March 28, 2025

The Sussex County Democratic Committee has announced the election of seven officers to represent area Democrats.

At its reorganization convention March 10, party members from the county’s 10 representative districts elected the new leadership team to serve a four-year term representing Democrats from across the county.

Executive officers are County Chair Jeff Balk, RD 14; First Vice Chair Loretta Benson, RD 36; Second Vice Chair Tim Garrahan, RD 39; Treasurer Valencia Hayes, RD 35, who was reelected to the position; Recording Secretary Harry Gold, RD 38, also reelected; Corresponding Secretary Michael Weiss, RD 14; and member-at-large Joe Sakaduski, RD 20.

Sussex County is one of four subdivisions that comprise the Delaware Democratic Party, which also includes New Castle County, Kent County and the City of Wilmington. Because each subdivision must hold a quadrennial election according to party rules, the Sussex convention attracted Betsy Maron, state party chair, and Travis Williams, state executive director.

During the convention, held at First State Community Action Agency in Georgetown, Maron paid tribute to Jane Hovington, outgoing county committee chair, who served for the last eight years. Presenting Hovington with a bouquet of flowers, Maron thanked the former leader for her many years of service and activism.

The Sussex County Democratic Committee’s next meeting is set for 6 p.m., Monday, March 24, at party headquarters, 21141 Sterling Ave., Georgetown. Meetings continue the fourth Monday of each month. All registered Democrats in the county are welcome to participate.
