Sussex needs adequate public facilities ordinance

April 8, 2025

The following letter is in response to a recent call and email from Cape Henlopen High School Principal Kristin DeGregory regarding problems caused by a new traffic signal configuration at the intersection of Kings Highway and Gills Neck Road.

The simple fact DelDOT couldn’t foresee this and so many other debacles created by exponential building without adequate infrastructure is no surprise. This administration as well as Sussex County Council and the planning & zoning commission are either incompetent or unwilling for suspect reasons.

All other towns and counties, including New Castle and Kent counties, have enacted an adequate public facilities ordinance to coordinate development instead of slipshod ridiculousness expecting smooth transitions while adding thousands upon thousands of homes without the necessary roads and education facilities. Forrest Gump was right – “Stupid is as stupid does.” It’s well overdue. The public service department, as well as the Legislature, need to wake up to reality.
