Mental health is a very important subject for me, as there have been many stressors throughout my life that have affected my mental health. But there has always been one place that’s provided a sense of comfort for me: the stage.
Acting, working backstage, developing long-lasting friendships with my cast-mates and even helping assemble set pieces for our shows has been such a pleasure for me. When I first started at Cape as a sophomore, I was always anxious. I didn’t want to come out of my comfort zone and do anything different, until I began participating in my theater class, and even performing in our recent main stage production.
Theater has always been there for me and made me more confident, which is why I wanted to write to you today. I firmly believe Theatre in Our Schools Month is a wonderful opportunity to provide appreciation for all things theater in our local communities, and to help kids break out of their shells, just like me. I sincerely hope anyone reading this letter will consider advocating for the importance of theater education in our schools.
