Downstate Mud Run comes to Milton April 16

April 8, 2011

The inaugural Downstate Delaware Dirty Dozen Mud Run is only a week away with 360 participants making up 120 teams in three divisions of male, female, and coed. Registration for the event is closed, and the Seashore Striders/Quest Fitness crews have been busy at the farm constructing, moving, and digging holes on the property for a challenging course to enjoy. Packet pick-up is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m., Friday, April 15, at Quest Fitness in Lewes, where a few of the challenges will be available for participants to try.  On race day, Saturday, April 16, participants and spectators are asked to use the Dogfish Head Brewery parking lot to car pool to the course off Route 16 next to Shamrock Par 3 golf course.  Go to seashorestriders.com for more race information and a sneak peek at the course and challenges. Does anyone know what mud even tastes like?

Dogfish Dash opens registration
April 1, better known as April Fools' Day, was the date we chose to open the online registration for the popular Dogfish Dash 5K and 10K in Milton. This year’s event is scheduled for 8 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 25, starting from the Dogfish Head Brewery, where runners and walkers will take in the historic town. We are accepting 1,750 entries this year with more than 1,120 having been received already. I am pretty sure the race will sell out in less than a week’s time, and the interesting item is that more than 80 percent of the participants are not local. I know it is too soon to look ahead, but if you are planning to race the Dogfish, whether you’re local or not local, go to dogfish.com to register.

Middle school track wrap
The future of Cape Henlopen track and field invaded Legends Stadium April 6 as Beacon Middle School and Mariner Middle School went head-to-head in dual meet action. The Beacon boys topped Mariner by a score of 93-16, while the Beacon girls held off Mariner by a 60-49 margin. The Mariner girls won eight events to Beacon’s five, led by 11 1/4 points from Anshe Boyer’s capturing the 100- and 200-meter runs and anchoring the 400- meter relay team. Lekarah Howell was a double event winner as she won the 55-meter hurdles and the long jump. Eighth-grader Madison MacElrevey remains undefeated on the season as she again captured three events, winning the 1,600 meters in 6:25.0, the 800 in 3:00.0, and the triple jump in 28-feet-8-inches. Stephanie Foresman won the high jump at 4 feet, while the Beacon girls won the 800-meter relay in 2:05.5. The Mariner girls also won the 400 relay in 56.2.

On the boys’ side, Beacon won 12 of 13 events in the meet with Mariner winning the discus with Marquise Jones throwing 85-feet-6. For Beacon it was Amir Conley highlighting the day with three wins, capturing the 100-meter dash in 13.3, the 200 in 25.8, and the long jump in 16-feet-9 1/2-inches. Jake Bamforth turned in a 5:22.0 1,600-meter win, just missing his own record of 5:21; he also captured the 800 in 2:25.7, shattering the school record set in 2005 at 2:29.0 by Nick Priano. Nester Bermudez won the 110-meter hurdles in 16.1, the 400 meters in 1:03.0 and anchored the winning 800-meter relay that ran 1:55.8.  Brennen Barwick won the shot put at 34-feet-8, Sam Young won the high jump at 4-feet-10, and Dylan Brown won the triple jump in 33-feet-1 1/2-inches.

Both Beacon and Mariner are scheduled to compete Friday night, April 8, in the Jim Blades Invitational at Lake Forest High School.

Upcoming Races
Sunday morning, April 10, runners will have two choices to race.  They can join the Ninth Annual Autism Delaware Walk-Race for Autism Half Marathon/5K, which takes off at 8 a.m. from the Irish Eyes parking lot in Lewes.

Runners looking for new territory can also head southwest to Salisbury, Md., for the first Sherman’s Stampede 5K Run/5K Walk to benefit Maryland’s Ronald McDonald House.

Beginning at 10 a.m., the Salisbury race is a first, hosted by Jen’s Gems out of Easton, Md., and produced by the Seashore Striders. The event is the second stop on the new Maryland Eastern Shore 8-Pack Racing Series.
