Schools start spring track
Cape track off and running
The Cape Vikings will kick off the outdoor track and field season this week with George Pepper leading the Cape girls and Charlie Pollard leading the Cape boys and numbers in the 20s out for the team. The Beacon Middle School team signed up 94 athletes with 66 showing up on day one for the boys and girls. Mariner, which enjoyed one of its finest seasons in 2010, will look to be strong again; and both Beacon and Mariner will compete in a dual this season and will run their home meets at Cape Henlopen High School. Come out and support the middle school and high school as they go for the gold.
Vinnie scores at Conference Meet
Cape graduate Vinnie Vazquez competed for Moravian College last weekend in the Landmark Indoor Track & Field Championships, helping his team score 215 points in the meet to win the title. Susquehanna was the closest team in second place with 143 points.
The Moravian men captured their second straight indoor championship, winning the meet hosted by Susquehanna University. The Greyhounds, who have won a total of eight indoor conference titles, captured every individual event on the track to dominate the competition. Sophomore Vazquez placed third at 20-6 ¼ inches in the long jump and fifth at 40-6 in the triple jump. The former Viking also took third in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.54 seconds for a busy day for his Moravian team. Congratulations, Vinnie.
