Cape runs the roster and clock versus Polytech in 11-0 win

September 19, 2024

Cape field hockey shut out Polytech at Champions Stadium Sept. 17, winning 11-0 and proving it takes a good team to produce a boring game.

The Panthers were missing three starters, further hampering their efforts as they managed zero shots on goal.

A happy Cape celebration happened with 2:03 left in the third period when freshman Ellen Ramsey, off the injured list, scored her first varsity goal off an assist from Atia Sabbagh that made the score 8-0.

“Ellen is a solid player who had a great preseason, and her return just makes us more solid,” said coach Kate Austin.

The Vikings got a hat trick from sophomore Emily Wells, who added an assist. Alysa McCarthy also had two goals for Cape.

Single goals were scored by Avary Miller, Claire Lopez, Mairead Rishko, Macy Steinwedel, Isabel Mastrangelo and Ramsey.

Miller and Norah Block each had two assists, and Sabbagh had one.

Anna Stancofski, a Cape assistant who played at Swarthmore just last season, said, “A good game. Very unselfish play from the players. They understand the ball moves faster than the players, and we are a fast team. Plus, everyone got to play.”

Kaida Karwoski  had 18 saves for the Panthers.
