Troop 95 Scouts explore historic Baltimore sites

January 22, 2025

Boy Scout Troop 95 members from Georgetown spent a December weekend camping at the United States Coast Guard Yard at Curtis Bay, just outside Baltimore.

Upon arriving, scouts and leaders set up camp, ate a quick snack and headed to bed. Waking up to a chilly 22 degrees, scouts dressed in their Class B uniforms, had breakfast and headed into the city to tour several historic locations.

At the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum, they took photos and learned about the iconic baseball player’s life. Next, they walked to Lexington Market for lunch, where scouts were given spending money to choose from a variety of eateries.

In the afternoon at the Baltimore Museum of Industry, scouts learned about how things were done decades ago, and saw a textile machine, printing press, machine shop and more.

Fort McHenry was the final stop of the day. Scouts toured the facility and learned how the Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812 inspired Francis Scott Key to write the words to “The Star Spangled Banner,” which became the U.S. national anthem.

Upon returning to their campsite, scouts prepared and ate dinner, played with newly purchased souvenirs and gathered around the Saturday night campfire. Everyone answered trivia questions and shared stories from the day before settling down for the night.

At 7:30 a.m. Sunday, Scouts started packing up camp equipment and ate breakfast. Being sure to follow Leave No Trace principles to care for the environment, scouts formed a line to pick up any remaining litter and trash. Once everything was sorted and placed into the troop's van, everyone attended the scout-led church service. The troop chaplain’s aide was not on the campout, so Kyle Munson led the service.

After boarding the bus, the scouts returned to Georgetown for unloading and parent pickup.
