Old World Breads opening second location in Long Neck

Looking to meet demands of a growing customer base west of Lewes, Old World Breads Bakery has announced it will open a second location in Long Neck.

The bakery announced the expansion on its Facebook page a few weeks ago.

Owner Keith Irwin said a lot of the bakery’s customers come from the Long Neck area. The growth in that area has been immense and there’s still more to come, he said.

“The people in that area seem excited. It’s been a very positive response so far,” he said.

Old World Breads has been a family-run operation since Irwin and his wife, Trish, opened the bakery in 2014. Trish is very organized and does back-of-the-house operations, said Irwin, who has a decades-long background in the bread, pastry and culinary profession.

In addition to meeting the growing demands, Irwin said the company is trying to get ahead of proposed road construction for the area near the Lewes bakery. The state has road improvement plans calling for roundabouts and expanded off ramps near the Nassau Bridge area.

Irwin said the area could be a mess for a while, which could affect business.

“We’re trying to be strategic,” he said.

Keeping the operation in the family, their daughter Riley, who recently turned 21, will be running the new location. She’s been the face of the bakery at local farmers markets for a while now, said Irwin.

“It’s exciting,” said Riley. “I’ve been working at the farmers markets since I was 13, so I’m used to it.”

The new location is off Long Neck Road, in a small building on the left heading toward Massey’s Landing. It’s been home to a number of restaurants and eateries over the past few years.

When the new shop opens, the Lewes location will serve as the production facility for both locations, said Irwin. However, he said, the new location also has a hood system, so there will also be an opportunity for sandwiches to be made.

The new location also has seating, said Irwin. That’s something that’s missing at the original location, he said.

Irwin doesn’t have a specific opening date for the Long Neck location.

“Sometime this spring, if not sooner,” he said.
