Cape swimming handles Lake in Henlopen Conference action

January 15, 2025

After a month off from competition, the Cape swim teams continued their undefeated ways with boys’ 102-52 and girls’ 120-41 victories over Lake Forest Jan. 13 in Felton.

“I think the team was a little rusty from the extra-long break with the snowstorm,” said sophomore Brady Schell. “But we still got the job done. We’re all excited to get back in the pool and get ready for big upcoming meets.”

The Lake meet was the first of three duals of the week.

“I think the team definitely pushed through and gave it their best, considering we had so few practices for a few weeks,” said junior Sidney Caldwell. “Our times were not our best, but again, given the circumstances and the fact that the pool was in meters, the times were not as bad as they could’ve been. Once we get back into our normal practice flow, we will be back into the groove of things and right where we need to be.”

Next week, Cape will swim against Seaford and Brandywine in separate meets.

“It’s definitely tough getting back into the pool after being out for so long,” said senior Hailey Hassell. “But our team did so well today. I’m confident that after a few days, we’ll be right back to where we were. Coach Gep has done an excellent job preparing us over the past few weeks with a lot of yardage, so we’re ready to jump back in and start competing again.”

“There was some rust for not competing  for a month,” said Cape coach Bill Geppert.  “It was good to get the kids back into the water. During my pre-meet talk, I started it off by saying "this is liquid water, in case you forgot what it was." The kids got a good laugh.

We have some challenging meets coming up so we just have to keep getting better. Looking forward to the big meets, conferences and the state meet coming up. Great moments are born from great opportunities.”
