Dying to Get Out: Death by Incarceration, a State of Delaware Life Sentences Summit, will be held from 1 to 4 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 1, at Jesus is Lord Church of Deliverance, 40 Ingramtown Road, Georgetown.

Including representatives from local communities and state offices, the summit will be held by and for previously incarcerated people; family and friends of currently incarcerated people; criminal justice system personnel; academics; policy makers; and members of the general public.

To register and learn more, email missedopts@gmail.com, call 302-401-3371 or find Delaware Center for Justice on Facebook.

As of 2024, 5,400 Delawareans are incarcerated in the state’s prisons, and another 9,630 are on probation or parole. Attendees will learn about death by incarceration, life without parole and virtual life sentences in Delaware, where a prisoner’s age and/or a sentence of 25-plus years are factors in the likelihood of them dying in prison.

Topics will include individual- and community-level harms of current sentencing laws and mechanisms for relief; humanizing and putting a face to people currently facing DBI; and specific policies for reform and ways to bring about positive change.
