‘World War II Battle of the Atlantic’ program set Feb. 24

February 21, 2025

The Overfalls Foundation will present “World War II Battle of the Atlantic: Eastern Sea Frontier” at 3 p.m., Monday, Feb. 24, at the Lewes Public Library, 111 Adams Ave., Lewes.

A pivotal campaign during World War II, the Battle of the Atlantic involved German U-boats attempting to disrupt the supply lines between the United States and Great Britain. The fighting in the shipping lanes around Great Britain is well known, but few people are knowledgable about how much of the battle was fought in United States home waters.

Fort Miles Museum Director Edward Paterline will discuss the little-known war against German submarines off the East Coast of the United States during World War II with a particular focus on the Mid-Atlantic region. Paterline will share how Fort Miles, designed and built to counter enemy surface ship attacks, protected the Delaware River from enemy submarine incursion. The event is free to the public.
