With the mini heat wave expected this weekend most of us will probably spend the majority of our time outdoors. Our bodies will definitely not be acclimated to the heat after this cold winter we have had. Additionally, many common medications can affect our tolerance to heat. So, if you plan to enjoy the warm temps this weekend with some outdoor activities or work, make sure you are smart about it.
It's easy to lose track of time when you're enjoying yourself. Whether you're working in the garden, doing other yardwork, exercising or just relaxing and reading in the sunshine, don't forget to hydrate. Mild dehydration can cause dizziness or lightheadedness and weakness which can lead to passing out or falling which can then lead to a broken bone or head injury. You can prevent this by taking frequent breaks and drinking about 8oz of water or an electrolyte drink every thirty minutes or so. Monitor yourself for signs of mild dehydration including thirst, lightheadedness or fatigue and if you have any of the symptoms take a longer break, go inside to cool off, drink extra water and have a light snack.
More serious heat related illnesses include heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Signs of heat exhaustion include dizziness or lightheadedness, nausea, weakness, muscle cramps, fast heart rate and headache. Heat stroke is more serious and includes all of the above symptoms as well as elevated body temp, feeling hot or flushed, and dry skin (lack of sweating) all of which can progress to confusion, and seizures.
So don't let a nice weekend turn into a visit to the Emergency Room. The best treatment for heat related illnesses is prevention. So be smart, pay attention to your body, and have fun!
