The Eagles focus on defense

April 25, 2025

In the first round of the NFL draft, the Eagles traded up one position to 31, and drafted Jihaad Campbell, linebacker from Alabama. He was not one of the players who was predicted to be drafted by the Eagles, but you can never have enough linebackers in the modern NFL, and he could possibly transition to defensive end as well. I think the Eagles will continue to focus on picks for the defense, possibly a tight end, and maybe even an offensive lineman.

I was also surprised that there were only two quarterbacks selected in the first round this year. Cam Ward was selected first, as predicted, by the Tennessee Titans. I hope he has a successful rookie season. Tennessee was very competitive in the playoffs two or three years ago when they had a decent quarterback. Also, the Giants traded back into the draft to select quarterback Jaxson Dart from Ole Miss with the 25th pick. Everybody thought Colorado's Shedeur Sanders was going to be picked in the first round, but that was not the case. I wonder if he was surprised about this too, but he will definitely be drafted in the second round. The draft has seven rounds and will last into Saturday afternoon.

The Phillies had a tough series of games against the New York Mets this past week. They lost all three games. And they’re now firmly in second place, five games behind the Mets after being in first place two weeks ago. Right now, the biggest problem is the lack of hitting and leaving runners in scoring position. In the major leagues you have to score at least five runs a game to win on a regular basis.

For that matter, pitching isn't doing a great job either. The team needs someone to back up Zach Wheeler because he seems to be the only one showing up. It's going to be very important for Aaron Nola to get back to his winning ways as quickly as possible. For some reason he is struggling to start the season and is 0/5 so far.

The tough schedule continues for the team as they play the Chicago Cubs this weekend. The Cubs have been quite a surprise, winning most of their games so far this season. They are currently in the lead in the National League Central division and apparently have a very good offense to get them started this way.

Hopefully, getting out of New York will wake up the bats for the Phillies offense so they can try to keep up with the Cubs. Thankfully the Phillies don’t have to play the Mets again until June. For some reason, the Mets have had the Phillies’ number for the last two years, including beating them in the playoffs last year.
