THOUGHTS FROM THE SIDELINES

The football stories never stop!

May 8, 2015

I thought the only football I would be recapping was the NFL draft. Not so much. That is not the case now that the NFL has come out with its "Deflate Gate" report on what happened before the 2014 AFC Championship game between the Patriots and the Colts.

The New England Patriots are going to get in some kind of trouble for what two of their employees did to deflate most of the Patriots footballs for that game. Strange but true, each team has their own set of balls for every game.

The starting quarterback, Tom Brady, had to have known something about what the two equipment managers were trying to do to the footballs. Brady needs to be suspended for one game and the equipment managers need to be fired. In the future, the NFL needs to have the officials control the pressure of the footballs. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

I was pleasantly surprised with what the Eagles did in the draft. They selected Nelson Agholor in the first round, a wide receiver from USC, to help replace Jeremy Macklin who decided to sign with the Kansas City Chiefs as a free agent. Most of the other Eagle's draft picks were on the defensive side of the ball where the Eagles need the most help.

All of the media hype about Marcus Mariota possibly being traded to a bunch of teams did not happen. He went to the Tennessee Titans with the second overall pick. So much for Eagles Coach Chip Kelly's desire to get Mariota by trading up to take him in the first round.

In the Kentucky Derby last week, the favorite, American Pharoah, won a very close race. Now let's hope he can do it again in the next two races to capture the Triple Crown. I will be watching as it unfolds. At least the Preakness and definitely the Belmont if he gets that far.

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. won his boxing match with Manny Pacquiao in convincing fashion. I was disappointed but not surprised. It turns out Pacquiao was fighting with a significant shoulder injury that he evidently sustained while training for this fight. I personally hope Manny does not face any significant punishment for trying to fight with the injury. I listened to a lot of commentary about it and they all said that fighters are always nursing injuries just because of the nature of the sport. It would be hard to argue that.

Pay attention to your local sports teams as the high school's wrap up their spring seasons. There are a lot of good games to follow.
