Thoughts from the sidelines

What a busy week

June 13, 2015

American Pharaoh has given horseracing the much-needed shot in the arm by winning the Triple Crown in very impressive fashion by five+ lengths over Frosted. The race was very close until the last turn, and then American Pharaoh just put it in another gear and claimed his prize.

There hasn't been a Triple Crown accomplished since 1978. We will see what next year brings and hope it isn't another 30+ years before we see this happen again. Horse racing is a fickle fella and only the Triple Crown winners' names are remembered.

The French Open tennis tournament was completed last week. On the women's side, Serena Williams won her 20th Grand Slam title. I now believe she's going to eclipse Steffi Graf's modern-day record for Grand Slam titles with 22.

Right now Serena is completely dominating all of her competition. It seems like the only hope the other players have is if she decides to retire. I don't think she's going to do that for at least the next few years

On the men's side, there was a huge upset in the finals when Stan Wawrinka beat Novak Djokovic in four sets to win his second major along with last year's Australia Open. This result was incredibly surprising because of how well Djokovic had been playing since last years US open.

Novak has won almost every tournament (and almost every set) in which he has competed since then. Djokovic was trying to win his career Grand Slam. Maybe next year.

In golf news last week at the Memorial Tournament in Ohio, Tiger Woods had a shockingly bad score of 85 on Saturday. He did not show any signs of being hurt but his game was a mess. He finished in last place for the cut on Saturday and because of that he had to play by himself for the last round on Sunday. His game improved a little, but I bet he was happy to have been alone and get that round over with and head home.

I selfishly hope that he can get his game back so that he can show the young players how good (I think) he still is. The tournament actually ended with a good playoff between David Lingmerth, from Sweden, and the 2013 U.S. Open Champ, Justin Rose. Both had some hiccups in the playoff but both recovered amazingly well too to make it really fun to watch. Lingmerth pulled out the win for his first victory on the PGA Tour.

If you like watching soccer at all, start watching the Women's World Cup on Fox and Fox Sports 1 now and on until early July. The level of play in most of the games is very impressive. There is one big difference from the mens World Cup. The United States Women's team actually has a legitimate chance to win the tournament. Go U.S.!!
