Thoughts from the sidelines

Phil should have won number 43

February 19, 2016

Last week, Phil Mickelson finished second in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am tournament. This would have been Phil's fifth victory on the Monterey Peninsula.

The more interesting part of the story is who actually won; journeyman golfer Vaughn Taylor. He had not won on the PGA tour for over 10 years! The last time Taylor was in the winner's circle was at the 2005 Reno-Tahoe Open.

For most of the time, he was struggling on the Web.com Tour, which is the triple A circuit for golf. For Phil Mickelson, this just proves that, at 45 years old, he's not done playing competitive golf and will probably go on to win some more tournaments.

I hope Tiger Woods was at home watching at least some of the highlights of this tournament to give him more hope of being able to make a comeback himself. There are exactly 2 months until the Masters Tournament and no one has a clue whether Tiger is going to be able to play. We will all have to wait and see.

There is a reason I don't care very much about the All-Star games in any sport. Last week, that was illustrated perfectly by the NBA All-Star game. The West team scored 196 points in a regulation forty eight minute game because nobody cares to play defense. It's all about stats in these kinds of games. So that is why I have boycotted watching All-Star games for the past few years. However, enough negative talk about the NBA.

I think the Golden State Warriors will actually break the all-time wins record of 73 games, because most of the teams outside the top four in the Western Conference are so overmatched by the Warriors.

Spring training baseball officially starts at the end of this week. The Grapefruit and Cactus League games start in about a week and a half. The pitchers start earlier than the field position players, mostly to make sure the pitchers don't get hurt. You don't want to have them participating in live games too fast and making a mess of the season before it even begins.
